“Galileo’s Regret”oil on canvas 35*50(2023)

What was Galileo’s regret? He was a famous revolutionist in his times, he traveled across europe and spread his thoughts. What was them; he proved Copernicus’s sun centered system with his observation through a telescope. The telescope he used was invented by him. So finally in the “Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems” he explained rational mistakes of Ptolemaic system. So when he was deceived to make him come back to Italy, the Inquisition capture him and made a deal with him. Galileo’s was afraid of being burned alive by Catholics like Bruno who was a great bishop and scientist claimed other star systems. New science theories was so important and dangerous for catholic church not because it will just lead atheist theories it because the church has their own science which was inherited from Aristotle and Ptolemeus. According to church’s science, our world was center of the universe and above moon there was a different dimension that a human cannot reach or see. Galileo was proved spinning earth theories of copernicus and observed mountains on Moon. So thats why he has to be burned to purify his sins like Bruno. To be not killed, he accepted their deal, according to that he wrote that his explanations were just theories which could not be proved. The church punished him with a home detention in his farmhouse. On this painting we are seeing his unhappened suicide. This is the unreal death of him; Galileo wrote his famous whisper “E pur si muove”(And yet it moves.) on his forehead and hugging to globe, apologize from it in flames and regrets. #galileo #philosophy
